See swollen River Tyne as it threatens to flood in Northumberland during Storm Dennis warnings

A swollen River Tyne was inches away from bursting its banks as flood warnings remain in place around the North East.

The river reached treacherous levels around the Northumberland village of Corbridge following a night of heavy rain brought by Storm Dennis.

A flood alert, warning of the possibility that the river will burst, remains in place for the Tyne around Hexham and Corbridge.

There are also alerts at the South Tyne near Haltwhistle and the North Tyne around Bellingham.

A Border Collie dog was undeterred by the deep water however, and was seen leaping through the flowing river on Sunday morning.

In Durham, the River Wear overtopped the riverbank where the new council HQ is being built at around 7am.

The Framwellgate Waterside road on the opposite side of the river remains closed due to the floodwater.

A flood warning, which means flooding is expected and immediate action is required, also remains in place at the River Tweed in Norham.

The threat of flooding is expected to return late on Sunday afternoon as the tides begin to rise, peaking at around 9pm.

A yellow warning for rain issued by the Met Office remains in place until 9pm on Sunday and covers parts of Northumberland, County Durham and Gateshead.

A wind warning which applies to the whole North East lasts until 12pm on Monday.
