See Sunderland from the air - from the River Wear to the Stadium of Light

This video captures the breathtaking view of Sunderland visitors see as they arrive into the region.

Shot from a plane heading towards Newcastle International Airport, it shows some of Sunderland's most recognisable landmarks.

The River Wear, Northern Spire and Wearmouth Bridge can all be seen on the video as well as the Stadium of Light.

Enjoying a rich history of heavy industry and shipbuilding, the River Wear weaves it way through the city to the North Sea.

From above you can see the £117 million Northern Spire bridge that opened in 2018, marking the first bridge to be built over the River Wear in 40 years.

The bridge became an instant recognisable landmark, with its striking 105-metre-high central pylon.

The Stadium of Light can also be spotted in the distance, with the 49,000 seater stadium home to Sunderland AFC.

Also along the banks of the River Wear is the newly opened The Beam, which has been built on the former Vaux Brewery site.

As well as the well-known landmarks, the stunning North East coastline can be seen from the plane.
