See stomach-churning conditions RNLI crew face in missing person exercise off Northumberland coast

No matter the weather, the lifeboats around our coast are prepared to battle the elements to help others in need.

And despite the wintry showers and gale force winds hitting the region on Tuesday, the RNLI crew at Seahouses were still carrying out training exercises.

The crew posted a video online showing the rough conditions and high waves as they made their way through the sea off the Northumberland coast.

They captioned the video: "We're out this afternoon battling the 50mph wind, rain and snow to practice our search patterns for a missing person.

"It's not glamorous but we always need to be prepared for what could be thrown our way."

Lying on the deck of the lifeboat is a dummy which is used during the search and rescue exercise.

Seahouses lifeboat operations manager Ian Clayton said: "We will try to put [the dummy] in the water, sail away and work out where it would drift to as if it were a person in the water."

Although the weather was described as "unpleasant" with some "squally snow showers", he added: "The crew needs to be prepared for these sorts of conditions. It's all part of the training."

The RNLI volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service and often carry out training exercises to make sure they are ready to face the next emergency.
