See revellers flood on to street as Durham pubs close before Covid lockdown

Shocking photographs show the hectic scenes in Durham city centre as pubs shut for on the final night before lockdown.

Social distancing became near-impossible as revellers poured out into the narrow streets in Durham City.

Many made the most of their final night of freedom before England enters the second national lockdown of 2020 to fight a second wave of Coronavirus.

University students and locals took the opportunity to make their way into the city for what will be their last night out in a pub or restaurant for at least the next four weeks.

The second lockdown is due to be reviewed on December 2nd.

The vast majority of people wore masks as they arrived to a jovial atmosphere in town to check into their pre-booked venues, although one or two did need some help back on their feet after stumbling on the pavement.

As the pubs and bars called last orders, scores of drinkers spilled out onto Elvet Bridge and Saddler Street.

Officers from Durham Police, who were out in force, directed the merry revellers away from the crowded streets, encouraging them to go back home safely for the night.
