See new designs for £7.2 million South Ayrshire sports arena

Designs have been revealed for a new £7.2 million national grade sports arena in Ayr to replace rundown Dam Park.

The stadium at Craigie will boast covered seating for 250 people, an eight lane outdoor athletics track, a 3G rugby pitch and changing pavilion.

Inside there would be a 60 metre six lane running track with jumps facilities.

A design statement said Dam Park, which is more than 50-years-old, is seen as inferior and at risk because of its condition.

Plans have been lodged by South Ayrshire Council to build the track.

The proposed vacant site of 6.7 hectares sits beside Ayr Academy. It was home to the old Ayr College, which has now been demolished.

Of the existing Dam Park, a design statement said: “The centre is failing to keep up with customer expectations and is regarded as inferior when compared to other regionally and nationally significant facilities.”

The document described the proposed arena as a “new home for sports within the local area."

It added: “South Ayrshire Council proposes to construct a new sporting facility and changing pavilion at Craigie Park, Ayr.”

Floodlighting, car parking, fencing and access roads are also part of the proposals.

An objection has been submitted from resident Douglas McClinton who is worried about additional traffic.

He said: “With this proposed centre being built, the area is going to become unbearable with regards to additional traffic volume in addition to people exploiting the Beech Grove end of the school to park and walk down to the centre.”

No decision has been made yet on the planning application.

Work is due to start this year.
