See moment Liverpool celebrations erupt in home end of St James' Park ahead of violence in the stadium

Footage showing Liverpool fans celebrating in the home end at St James' Park ahead of violence in the stadium has emerged.

Seven people were arrested and 22 ejected from the ground following violent scenes during and after Saturday's match.

A club spokesperson has confirmed that several Liverpool fans purchased corporate tickets in the Milburn Stand, but rejected claims there were as many as 200 in the stand.

Video footage has come to light showing the large number of away supporters openly celebrating just a couple of rows away from Toon fans.

The jubilant celebrations from Reds fans when they scored a crucial late winner to keep their title push going prompted groups of home supporters to surge towards the stand in an effort to confront the fans.

Security personnel struggled to keep the two sides apart and witnesses have reported seeing violent clashes in the Milburn stand.

There had been sporadic scuffles around the ground throughout the game as security struggled to diffuse tensions between home supporters and away fans, who were so desperate to see their team in the crunch clash that they risked sitting in the home end.

Newcastle ticket holders were threatened with bans and fines but the bulk of the disorder occurred around the supporters who were sold tickets by the club's box office.

In a statement, a club spokesperson said they "did endeavour to eject any visiting fans from home and hospitality areas when outbreaks of disorder did regrettably occur".

The statement added officials "will be reviewing supporter feedback and CCTV" following the ugly scenes.

Violence continued outside the ground as groups of supporters clashed while Liverpool fans were boarding coaches.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We are working with the club to identify those involved in any disorder. Anyone with information which could assist should contact police on 101 quoting reference 724 04/05/19.”
