See Lions QB David Blough’s emotional reaction as his wife, Melissa Gonzalez, qualifies for Olympic semifinals

Following Friday’s training camp practice, Detroit Lions players gathered to support teammate David Blough, whose wife, Melissa Gonzalez, was competing in a qualifying heat for the 400 meter hurdles at the Tokyo Games.

On Saturday morning in Tokyo (Friday evening in the United States), Gonzalez finished second in the first heat of the 400 meter hurdles, where she advanced to the semifinal round. Gonzalez ran a 55.37, which is a personal best and a national record for her country of Colombia.

The Lions social media team captured Blough’s reaction on video, and it’s easily the best thing you’ll see all day:

“You don’t always get these type of experiences, but to me that embodies enjoying the ride because that was pretty cool,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said Saturday, via ESPN. “It was a moment, I can tell you that.”

For Blough, it was an early birthday present, as he turned 26 on Saturday morning.

“It was about the best birthday present you could ever ask for in her just being there,” Blough said, via ESPN. “So, we’re so thankful.”

Next up for Gonzalez is the semifinal heat on Monday, Aug. 2, where she’ll compete for a trip to the final.
