See launch of World Transplant Games in Newcastle on a noisy, colourful, joyous day of celebration

As for as launches go, the opening of the World Transplant Games has to stand out as one of the most vibrant and cheerful.

From the moment the first athletes started to gather on Saturday in Newcastle 's Old Eldon Square, the mood was upbeat and excited.

The sun was out and with family entertainment provided on the adjacent Blackett Street, which is grassed over for people to enjoy at weekends, the atmosphere continued to build.

Music struck up as teams of athletes from around the world arrived proudly bearing their countries' flags ahead of their parade through the city streets chanting and singing.

And spectators and passers-by responded in kind, clapping and cheering on the procession as it made its way up Northumberland Street to Northumbria University's Sport Central for the opening ceremony to mark the start of the week-long programme of sporting action.

Spectators are encouraged to continue to show their support throughout the Games at the range of upcoming events which are free to attend.
