See Joey Chestnut’s intense mouth workout for the hot dog eating contest

Competitive eating legend Joey Chestnut is the undisputed king of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest, with 11 wins in his career over the last 12 years. Chestnut broke his own world record last July 4th by consuming 74 hot dogs and buns, and he’ll try to set a new mark on Coney Island this week.

How does Chestnut get an edge on the competition? He shared his unorthodox training regimen in an ESPN 30 for 30 film The Good, the Bad, and the Hungry, which chronicles the lives of Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi, a five-time champion of the event.

Chestnut gets his jaw muscles in shape by rapidly chewing a ball, and lifting weights with his teeth. He also has an exercise for gulping down air – which can lead to extreme belching.

The 2019 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest will begin at Noon ET on ESPN 2.
