See it: Giants’ Pat Shurmur reacts to his son, Kyle, running the 40

The 2019 NFL Combine has been a unique one for New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur and his son, Vanderbilt quarterback Kyle Shurmur.

Pat, of course, is on the scene scouting talent for the Giants, including at the quarterback position, while Kyle is attempting to improve his draft stock and compete with some of the more high-end quarterbacks.

Although not exactly a family affair, Pat and Kyle have understandably made it a point to spend some time together, but perhaps nothing was more telling of their relationship than on Saturday as Kyle ran the 40-yard dash.

Looking on from the booth, Pat couldn’t help but to pump his fist as Kyle crossed the line with a sub-5.0 second performance, which was better than Ohio State product Dwayne Haskins (5.04).

Check it out from a few different angles:

Earlier in the week, Pat praised his son as both a person and a player.

“I’m extremely proud of him,” Pat said. “He’s made great decisions. He did an excellent job in high school giving himself the opportunity to go to a place like Vanderbilt. He graduated in 3 1/2 years. Helped them win games. He’s a good player.”

Meanwhile, the two did have a chance to share a very rare and unique combine moment after quarterbacks reported on Day 2.

“There were informal interviews and I was near the Giants,” the younger Shurmur said via NJ Advance Media. “He came up and gave me a hug — a bro hug or whatever you call it.”

Regardless of where Kyle ultimately ends up, you can’t help but to love and appreciate the bond Kyle and Pat have, and how they’ve managed to keep everything professional and business-like save for a few subtle celebrations here and there.
