A takeaway cup of tea, a pair of sunglasses, a toy animal hanging from the ceiling. The usual detritus of a car – but, in this case, covered in a frosting that sweeps from the top of the inside windscreen to the top of the dashboard, then down the radio to the gear stick.

That's the clue that this is no ordinary car, or at least not one that has simply been left overnight outside a house or on the roadside during the day.

It is the car that Peter Skyllberg says he survived in for two months, while buried in the snow in northern Sweden. Before two passing snowmobilers dug out the car and found the 44-year-old lying on the back seat in his sleeping bag, this would have been his home, kept alive by the "igloo effect" of the same packed snow blocking light through the windscreen in the picture above.
