See how hundreds of youngsters gathered in Newcastle City Centre to fight climate change

Hundreds of children skipped school and gathered in Newcastle City Centre to demand action on climate change.

The group held a rally at Newcastle Civic Centre before marching to Grey's Monument on Friday morning.

Many of the youngsters carried placards and banners with messages such as "Stop denying the earth is dying", "The oceans are rising and so are we" and "We'll do our maths when you do your jobs".

They shouted slogans like "Our future, our planet".

The YouthStrike4Climate protest in the city centre, part of the global School Strikes for Climate movement, was inspired by Swedish student Greta Thunberg, who at the age of 15 began protesting outside Government buildings about the need for immediate action to combat climate change and has since become an outspoken climate activist.

Abel Harvie-Clark, who was among the group, said: "These are the most important years of civilisation. This is the difference between having a planet to live on and having a planet where plants don’t grow, where we've got millions of climate refugees across the world.

"It's simply not an option to stand by and do nothing and let that happen - we've got to stand up and do something."

During one speech, it was said: "This problem is real. This problem is going to kill us.

"I may be a child and most of us are children but we are still going to stand up and we are still going to do everything in our power to save our planet."
