See hills covered in a blanket of white as snow hits Northumberland

Snow has arrived in Northumberland, turning remote hills white.

The first snowfall of winter has hit parts of the North East this week, with snowy scenes also visible in the hills around Weardale.

Met Office weather warnings covered the Western parts of the county, near the border with Cumbria, with warnings that the icy conditions could cause travel disruption overnight and into Friday morning.

Forecasters predict a "cold and cloudy day" across the region, though snow is likely to be confined to the hills.

With rain turning showery in the afternoon, the light carpet of snow may be washed away, although spells of hill snow are likely to return overnight.

That could continue on Saturday, with "scattered showers of rain and isolated hill snow through much of the day".

In Ridsdale, high up in the hills on the A68, near Bellingham, homes, cars and pavements were covered in snow.

The roads remained clear and passable, but the picturesque dusting of white atop houses and hills created a beautiful winter scene.

Last year, snow hit the North East at roughly the same time of year, with voters in Northumberland having to contend with snowfall during the December 12 election.

However, the region hasn't seen heavy snowfall this side of New Year in a winter for a few years now, with heavier flurries last winter seen in January and February.
