See Hexham Abbey lit entirely by candlelight in an atmospheric 'Festival of Flame'

Lit only by twinkling candles arranged in dazzling patterns, Hexham Abbey was transformed by flame on Friday night.

Visitors got to experience the 12th century abbey as people would have seen it for centuries, without the benefit of electric light and lit only by torches and candles.

And if you missed it, you can experience what that would have been like in our video, above.

The abbey's first 'Festival of Flame' began on Friday, with a special display of hundreds of tealights burning in the design of four interlaced triquetra wowing visitors.

Visitors were able to enjoy an atmospheric trail around the abbey (newcastle chronicle)

Outside, visitors were confronted with a Viking-inspired fire garden and a "dazzling" pear tree illuminated with thousands of points of light.

The festival was backed by an atmospheric soundtrack interspersed with bite-sized live performances of Bach. Specially commissioned work by artist Helen Clark and a poem by local poet Stan Beckensall were also on display.

The candlelit displays were part of the Great Northumberland Winter Festival, taking place across the county throughout the season.

In Hexham, many of the events focus on the town's Viking past.

A Viking Invasion, organised by Hexham Community Partnership, saw a series of street theatre performances and workshops taking place across the town.

Visitors and locals were invited to listen to Viking music, find out more about Viking weaponry and even try on some traditional Viking costumes.

The last of these performances is still to come, taking place outside Hexham Abbey on Friday December 13.
