See heavy snow bring traffic to a standstill in County Durham

Snow and ice have brought parts of the North East to a standstill with drivers left stranded in their vehicles.

The region woke up to a blanket of snow on Monday morning with areas in both County Durham and Northumberland being hit the most.

Drivers have experienced traffic chaos this morning with cars and buses getting stuck in the treacherous conditons.

Several roads are currently closed, with accidents and queues also affecting journey times.

Four lorries are reportedly stranded on the A1(M) northbound near Bowburn.

Meanwhile the snow has meant Lobley Hill Road is completely impassable around Marley Hill.

Public transport has also been affected, with many bus routes either diverted, delayed or completely cancelled.

Snow remains on the paths and roads in Consett with many commuters getting stuck and being left in queues for long periods.

A yellow weather warning is in place until 3pm predicting travel disruption due to snow and flooding.
