See filming under way in Newcastle on new film Blue Jean

Passers-by are more used to spotting Vera in action around the North East but this week it was the cast and crew of a feature film that were bringing some drama to Tyneside streets.

Filming for new film Blue Jean was taking place in Gosforth on Wednesday, where the focus of attention was on a quiet residential seat.

This is believed to be the second week of the local shoot and it appears that the film's location-spotters had our Vera's sharp eye for detail as filming happened to be focused on the same street - Moor Crescent - which has also featured in a scene from the ITV crime drama.

This time it was a film crew at work on scenes for a story set in the region in 1988 and featuring a character called Jean who is forced to lead a double life.

The blast-back tale is out to capture the atmosphere of the time when a new law passed by Margaret Thatcher's government prohibited promotion of homosexuality in schools.

The Jean of its title is a PE teacher who, fearing homophobic comments, fights to keep her sexuality a secret.

Involving BBC Films and Kleio Films, with BFI - British Film Institute - and National Lottery support, it is a first film for director Georgia Oakley and the drama sees Jean pushed to the brink after she is confronted in a lesbian bar and a new student threatens to expose her sexuality.

The shoot follows earlier advertising earlier this year from Shaheen Baig Casting agency to find people to fill "female-identifying roles".

The advert encouraged applicants from the LGBTQ+ community to play characters aged anything from 20 to 45 alongside the professional actors.

Earlier in the week the Blue Jean crew were spotted at work on the film at Grey Street in North Shields.
