Security risk at Hunter hospitals, MP says

Security: Sonia Hornery has called for increased hospital security.

SONIA Hornery has called on the NSW Government to take "immediate action" to fix security in public hospitals.

The State Member for Wallsend has moved a Notice of Motion calling for more security guards, better training and the authority to detain violent patients at the John Hunter and Calvary Mater hospitals.

"This Government has been conducting reviews and security audits at both the John Hunter and Calvary Mater Hospitals since 2012," she said. "The 2012 audit showed alarming security risks and called on the government to take action, however nothing has changed."

Ms Hornery said last year she met with former Health Minister, Peter Anderson, who was conducting a state-wide review of hospital security.

"It is now half way through 2020 and here we are again, still without a single additional security officer having been employed at the John Hunter or Mater hospitals," she said.

"Hospital staff are sick of being treated like punching bags."
