Security measures 'ramped up' for Manchester United vs Liverpool with plan in place

Security measures are set to be 'ramped up' ahead of tomorrow's Premier League meeting between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford.

There was chaos outside the ground the last time the Red Devils were scheduled to host Jurgen Klopp's side back in May, with protests against the European Super League leading to fans storming the pitch, causing damage to property and the match itself being postponed.

The replayed fixture 11 days later brought further drama when the tyres of a Liverpool team bus were slashed en route to Old Trafford, though this was not the coach carrying the first-team squad and management.

Manchester United were recently put on 'red alert ' amid fears of further protests this weekend, in response to the Red Devils' current situation.

Many United fans remain unhappy with the direction that the club is going in under the Glazer family and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having already fallen off the pace set by those at the top of the Premier League table.

In a bid to avoid a repeat of the dramatic scenes witnessed five months ago, the Daily Mail have claimed that Greater Manchester Police will have extra officers on duty and are expected to issue a statement on Saturday urging fans to behave at the high-risk Category C game.

It is understood that there are no fan protests currently planned, but tighter security will be in place around the team hotels and buses regardless.

Liverpool are looking to secure back-to-back league wins at the home of the Red Devils for the first time 2002, having tasted success in 2000/01 and 2001/02 thanks to solitary strikes from Danny Murphy on both occasions.
