Security increased at Jewish school as tensions over Israel bombings boil over

Security has been increased at a Jewish school in Liverpool as tensions over the conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants boil over.

King David High School, in Childwall, has changed its security arrangements after widespread anger at heavy Israeli bombing in the Gaza strip, which has resulted in an increasing civilian death toll.

The conflict has provoked large protests in support of the rights of Palestinian people trapped in a warzone.

However there have also been serious incidents of anti-Semitism recorded, leading to fears for the safety of Jewish people in the UK.

Videos circulating on social media on Sunday showed a convoy of vehicles decked in Palestinian flags, driving through an area of North London with a big Jewish population, carrying a man broadcasting anti-Semitic abuse over a megaphone.

Another protest involved a large inflatable depicting an anti-Semitic stereotype of a Jewish man with devil horns and red eyes.

Charity The Community Security Trust (CST), which advises British Jews on security issues, said there had been a fivefold increase in reports of anti-Semitism since bombings began in the Gaza strip this month.

Between May 8-17, CST recorded 86 anti-Semitic incidents, up from 16 in the previous 10 days.

A King David High School spokesperson said: “We have made some adjustments to security arrangements on the school site as a precautionary measure due to the current situation in the Middle East.

"This is not as a result of any specific threat but is based on national advice."
