The UN Security Council called on Friday for Fayez al-Sarraj’s Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Khalifa Haftar to “rapidly” commit to a ceasefire.

"The Security Council calls for all parties rapidly to return” to the political mediation carried out by UN envoy Ghassan Salame, said a unanimous press statement issued following a closed-door meeting called by Britain.

A diplomat, who attended the meeting, told Asharq Al-Awsat that “only a political solution would help achieve peace in Libya.”

The Security Council backs Salame’s efforts for a settlement, he said.

During the meeting, Council members were briefed by Reena Ghelani, Director of Operations and Advocacy for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, on the situation in Libya.

Ghelani said a large number of people have been killed and injured in and around Tripoli.

She urged the Council to take a decisive stance from the deteriorating situation and stressed the importance of securing humanitarian assistance.
