Section of M6 shut after crash with air ambulance at scene and long traffic delays

Police and an air ambulance are responding to a multi-vehicle crash on the M6 this afternoon.

The incident has led to two lanes of the southbound carriageway being closed between J18 Holmes Chapel and J17 Sandbach in Cheshire.

Highways England said North West Motorway Police, Cheshire Police and the North West Ambulance Service are all at the scene.

In a tweet the agency said there are long delays extending to Junction 19 at Knutsford.

Traffic travelling southbound out of Manchester may also be affected.

"Please be aware there are long delays on the M6 southbound J19 to J17 Congleton due to the ongoing collision," the tweet read.

"There is approx. 7 miles of congestion which is likely to add around 45 mins onto usual journey times."

UPDATE: At 4pm, Highways England have said the lanes have been reopened.
