Section of M1 closed overnight after serious lorry crash

A section of the M1 has been closed until Saturday morning (December 12) after a serious crash between two lorries.

The collision took place close to junction 21a at Leicester Forest East at 7.04pm on Friday.

The motorway has been closed southbound until Saturday morning - trapped traffic is being turned by emergency services working at the scene.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "Police were called to the scene close to junction 21a at Leicester Forest East at 7.04pm today, Friday, December 11.

"Colleagues from the East Midlands Ambulance Service and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service were also called to the incident.

"The M1 has been closed southbound at junction 22 and will remain closed overnight.

"Motorists are advised to seek an alternative route.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: "The M1 Southbound at junction 22 will remain closed until Saturday morning.

"The trapped traffic is being turned but this is a slow process.

"The diversion route is A50 to the A46 and then south to re-join the M1. Please drive carefully."
