Section of busy Dunkeld Road in Perth to be closed off for two weeks to allow resurfacing works

Drivers have reacted with outrage at plans to close a stretch of one of Perth’s busiest roads for two weeks.

The resurfacing project on Dunkeld Road will address defects on the northbound section located between the Cameron Motors dealerships and the Asda supermarket roundabout.

Due to the nature of the works and the available road space, the resurfacing will be carried out under a northbound carriageway closure, and will require both Kestrel Way and Gowans Terrace to be closed at their junctions with Dunkeld Road.

A diversion will be put in place via the A85 and A9 for motorists and public transport leaving Perth city centre.

Local diversions will also be in place for the junction closures previously mentioned.

The works will not begin until June 16, after the current project on Edinburgh Road in Perth is completed.

Traffic will still be able to travel southbound on the Dunkeld Road during this period.

In a public statement a Perth and Kinross Council spokesperson added: “Traffic will continue to be able to travel southbound into the city centre throughout the works on the northbound carriageway.

“Temporary traffic lights will also be in place at the supermarket roundabout to allow northbound traffic access up to this point.

“Vehicle access to properties and businesses within the works area will be maintained, however some delays should be expected as the works progress.

“Traffic management operatives will be on site to assist with access requirements.

“Pedestrian and emergency service vehicle access will be maintained throughout.

“Waste collections will continue, so bins should be presented kerbside as normal.”

Local businesses along the Dunkeld Road, such as Bayne’s bakery, Cameron Motors and Arnold Clark have made staff aware of the works.

In response to PKC’s social media post regarding the works, a number of residents voiced their frustration.

One said: “Why two weeks? They can resurface a stretch of motorway overnight.

“The inconvenience and chaos this will cause....”

Another added: “Again, [I have] lost count how many times that road has been relaid. Maybe get a decent contractor.”

One resident responded: “No reason why the northbound can’t still be two-way. No reason why one lane on the southbound could be done first, then swap over.

“Used to always be like that but suddenly someone sitting in an office (at home) thinks full road closures are better.”

Another said: “When the schools are still in? Could you not wait till the summer holidays start?”

One resident concluded: “No way people are going to follow that ridiculous diversion. They’ll be speeding up Balhousie and round Bute drive.

However an individual rebutted the other comments and said: “Folk moan about the road needing repaired.

“Road gets repaired, folk moaning [the] road [is] now getting repaired.”
