Sectarian Celtic fan fined £270 after yelling abuse at police officer

A Celtic fan who hurled sectarian abuse at a police officer during a match was fined £270.

Barry McLauchlan, from Craigneuk, made the comments towards PC Alan Gilbert, 48, at a game against Kilmarnock in December last year.

Officers intervened after 39-year-old McLauchlan got into an argument at Celtic Park with three teenage Killie fans.

The Hoops went on to win 5-1 in the game against the Ayrshire side.

McLauchlan pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to acting in a threatening and abusive manner aggravated by religious prejudice.

Prosecutor Charlene Murphy said: “The Kilmarnock fans moved away when they were warned.

“The accused refused to move on and continued to shout and swear at the group despite several warnings.

“He turned to PC Gilbert and said: ‘You are all the same, a f***ing proddy b*****d’.”

McLauchlan was then arrested at the scene by officers.

Lawyer, Lindsay Gaughan, defending, told the court the Kilmarnock fans were making “sectarian comments” towards McLauchlan.

Miss Murphy called for a football banning order but this was refused by Sheriff Charles Lugton.

McLauchlan, of Glencairn Avenue, was hit with a £270 fine down from £300 due to his guilty plea.

The father-of-one had no previous convictions.

Sheriff Lugton said: “Behaviour of this kind is disgraceful and cannot be accepted.”
