Secrets Keeper of The Sudanese Army

Sudan's late minister of defense Jamal Omar Ibrahim

Jamal Omar Ibrahim, Sudan's late minister of defense, was considered the “Sudanese treasury of military secrets,” due to his long tenure in the military intelligence apparatus until his appointment as its head in March 2107.

Born in 1960, Ibrahim was named defense minister after the armed forces toppled Omar Al-Bashir in a palace coup last April following months of nationwide protests.

Before becoming minister, he headed the security and defense committee of the interim government.

Growing up, Ibrahim received his primary education in Al Qadarif and secondary education in Wad ben Naga. He graduated from the military college among his comrades in batch (31) and obtained a diploma in military sciences.

Since his graduation, he ranked up in departments of the Sudanese army and Ministry of Defense, until he was appointed as head of military intelligence, considered the most sensitive position in the military establishment.

Sudan’s Chairman of the Transitional Military Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan appointed Ibrahim as defense minister in 2019.

The deceased received advanced military studies in Egypt. He took basic and advanced intelligence courses and infantry leadership courses.

Ibrahim also earned a master’s degree in military science and a diploma in international studies at the University of Nairobi.

His fellows and comrades say that he was calm and a listener, keeping secrets in his chest.
