Secretive FBI dig continues on the bank of a lake in Oakland Park residential community

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. — Human remains? Evidence? Whatever it is the FBI and Broward Sheriff’s Office have been digging for since Wednesday, they are keeping a tight lid on it.

Investigators have pitched several tents along the bank of a lake in the Eastside Village community in the 4200 block of N. Dixie Highway in Oakland Park, just south of Commercial Boulevard.

A backhoe has been scraping the surface and digging a hole. Agents have been using shovels and picking through the dirt looking for something.

Various news outlets aired TV footage on Wednesday of an agent stepping into a hole, retrieving what appeared to be clothing.

Construction of the residential community was completed in 2017 but there were reports that what officials were looking for may have been buried there before construction began in 2016.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office would only say it was part of a criminal investigation and gave no specifics.

Residents have noticed the frequent activity, but don’t know much about it. Yellow police tape surrounds the entire lake. Onlookers have been chased away by a Broward Sheriff’s deputy stationed in the parking lot across the lake from the dig site.
