Secretary Blinken urges Congress to pass additional national security funding

Urgency and creativity are key to America's approach in tackling global challenges.

Secretary of State Tony Blinken held a year-end press conference today, highlighting the urgency and creativity needed to address global challenges. He underscored President Biden's commitment to resolving seemingly intractable conflicts and shared the administration's accomplishments in strengthening the State Department.

Blinken emphasized that America's interests demand swift action and innovative solutions. He mentioned President Biden's role in overseeing the end of the Iraq War as Vice President and bringing an end to the longest war in American history in Afghanistan as President. Additionally, he pointed out the administration's efforts in securing and extending a truce in the Yemen conflict.

The Secretary of State praised the State Department's progress in 2023. He mentioned the department's active participation in 106 hearings, a record-breaking figure. He highlighted the establishment of new bureaus and increased staffing to address critical needs and crises. Other investments included an increased focus on global health security, creating new courses and development opportunities, and improving benefits for department personnel.

Blinken stressed that the current moment is an inflection point that will have lasting consequences. To deliver on issues affecting the lives of the American people and solve global challenges, he argued that continued investment in the country, its network of allies, and its ability to lead is crucial. He implored Congress to pass the President's additional national security funding request, emphasizing that failure to do so would benefit adversaries like Moscow, Tehran, and Beijing.

Before taking questions, Blinken expressed gratitude to the press corps, acknowledging their dedication despite the dangers they face. He commended their efforts to ask tough questions and provide accurate and timely information to the public, highlighting the importance of an informed and engaged citizenry.

The Secretary of State concluded his remarks by wishing everyone happy holidays and expressing his readiness to answer questions from the press.

In the subsequent question-and-answer session, reporters had the opportunity to delve deeper into various issues, allowing the Secretary of State to provide more insight into the administration's foreign policy priorities.

Overall, Blinken's year-end press conference highlighted the Biden administration's commitment to creative problem-solving, effective diplomacy, and the importance of an independent press in upholding democratic values.
