Secret beer gardens in Liverpool where you can soak up the sun

Liverpool is finally seeing some warm weather, and with that comes the overwhelming desire to be sat in a beer garden with an ice cold drink.

The city has no shortage of bars and restaurants with outdoor areas perfect for relaxing in the sun, but there are many that you may never have heard of. With the ever-changing weather we get in Liverpool, there’s no doubt many will be heading to a beer garden as soon as possible.

Whether these places on are your doorstep or require a bit of travel, they're definitely worth taking a wander down to see them for yourself. Take a look below at our list of Liverpool’s little-known beer gardens.

Murphy's Distillery

Inside Murphy's Distillery (Murphy's Gin and Distillery)

The team behind Murphy's Gin has launched their own bar with a picturesque courtyard. Murphy's Distillery is tucked away on the Dock Road, near Ten Streets Social and the Invisible Wind Factory. I

Murphy's Distillery is open Wednesday to Sunday. The venue offers live music as well as local food vendors serving street food.

Sub Rosa

Hidden gem bar Sub Rosa is back open for 2022. The bar, from the team behind the much loved Botanical Garden, opened its doors on Kings Dock Street in summer 2021, serving everything from beer from Black Lodge Brewery to gin slushies.

The venue features a large events space, with room for up to 30 people, seating areas made from converted trolleys and even a bar made from a shipping container. The extensive drinks menu includes a range of beer and lager created in collaboration with Black Lodge Brewery, a number of cocktails and the hugely popular flavoured gin slushies.

Tiki Bao

'Tropical paradise' Tiki Bao is Liverpool's island-themed rooftop bar. Nestled above Collective’s other two bars, The Highball Club and Butter in the city centre, Tiki Bao aims to teleport customers up and away from the hustle and madness of Seel Street.

Tiki Bao is an 'edgy spin' on the classic Southern Pacific Island themed bar and features a huge wall mural of a hula girl, bamboo clad furniture and bar. Tiki Bao offers an extensive cocktail menu, with drinks ranging from tiki bar staples like the flaming Zombie, to the house Tiki Pornstar Martini. The menu also features Grog and Lychee Tequila shots.

Spanish Caravan

Prescot bar Spanish Caravan has opened a beer garden on Slater Street in Liverpool city centre. The bar is Mediterranean-themed and aims to "build community by providing drinks that bring people together and an atmosphere that is a hub for local entertainment".

You can find Spanish Caravan at 34 Slater Street.

Pen Factory

The Pen Factory (Liverpool Echo)

Hope Street’s stunning bar and restaurant offers a cosy little sun trap that makes it that much better in the summer. It’s the perfect place to grab your drink, pull up a stool and enjoy the sun.

The Monro

The Monro on Duke Street is much-loved in the city - but did you know it has a beautiful beer garden? It’s filled with hanging baskets and colourful plants, making it an amazing summer stop-off.

The Lodge

One of Lark Lane’s most popular watering holes is also home to one of its best beer gardens. It’s not the biggest, but it’s certainly a stunning place to enjoy a cocktail or a pint.

The Dovey

The Dovedale Towers, Penny Lane (The Dovedale Towers)

Always a popular choice - especially when the match is on - The Dovey also offers an enviable outdoor area. If the sun is out and you’re around Penny Lane, this is the place to be.

Ye Cracke

Ye Cracke on Rice Street (Liverpool Echo)

Easy to miss but worth seeking out, Ye Cracke on Rice Street is home to a leafy beer garden with plenty of seating. The pub even has a Beatles connection - as many do in our city - as John Lennon and then girlfriend reportedly used to go ‘courting’ there many moons ago.

The Merchant

The Merchant on Slater Street has a large outdoor area that's perfect for a drink in the sunshine. There's seating on the sidewalk on Parr Street and at the back on the venue in the beer garden.
