Secondary school teachers across Lanarkshire striking today over pay disputes

Secondary schools across South Lanarkshire are closed today as another day of strike action takes place.

Teachers took to the picket lines to demand a pay increase, just 24 hours after primary school teachers went on strike.

The teachers across the area are taking part in industrial action in pursuit of a pay rise, and members of the EIS, NASUWT and SSTA unions are striking after rejecting a pay offer that would give the lowest paid members a 6.85 percent raise.

Unions are striking for a pay rise which is in line with inflation.

Members of the EIS are asking for a ten per cent increase, whereas members of the NASUWT are requesting 12 per cent.

Teachers at Hamilton Grammar school were on the picket line demanding a ten per cent pay rise.

They said: “We just want a fair pay rise, we’re not asking for anything more than what we’re worth.”

A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “Strikes in our schools are in no-one’s interest – including for pupils, parents and carers who have already had to deal with significant disruption over the past three years.

“We value our teaching workforce and recognise the vital importance of an agreement on pay, but we cannot escape the unprecedented pressures facing Scotland’s budget.

“While we have been clear that a 10 per cent pay increase is unaffordable within the Scottish Government’s fixed budget, we remain absolutely committed to a fair and sustainable pay deal.”
