Secondary school pupils return to classroom after Easter break - everything you need to know

Nearly all secondary pupils in Scotland will return to full-time school this week for the first time in months after the Easter holidays.

Pupils in the the majority of council areas across the country will head back to classrooms on Monday and Tuesday as part of the Scottish Government's phased lockdown return.

It marks the first time pupils will have spent a full week in classrooms since before Christmas after the country was plunged into a second national lockdown with strict restrictions.

Pupils in S1-S3 were forced to wait for their return to class full-time, but were given the green light last week as part of Nicola Sturgeon's lockdown review.

In some council areas, secondary pupils returned last week, including in Aberdeen, Fife, Dumfries and Galloway, Shetland and the Western Isles.

The majority of council areas returned on Monday, April 19, while schools in Edinburgh, Midlothian and Glasgow will return on Tuesday this week.

Only pupils who are on the shielding list will remain at home until April 26.

The strict two metre distancing rule will be removed as restrictions are relaxed, but pupils will be required to wear face coverings when not in classrooms.

Twice weekly lateral flow testing is being offered to all staff and senior secondary pupils in a bid to keep virus transmission at bay.

It comes after primary schools returned full-time teaching before the Easter holidays, while a part-time blended learning system remained in place in secondary schools.

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that she will set out plans for a more expansive reopening of the country on April 20 - ahead of the planned wider opening of the hospitality and retail sector on April 26.

The likes of garden centres, barbers and hairdressers were able to reopen from yesterday.

Scots will await to hear the proposed plans for the hospitality industry, including alcohol served in beer gardens from next week.
