Secondary school honours pupils' values and selfless contributions

Coatbridge High has honoured its pupils for their impressive and selfless values.

Earlier this year, the school launched a new initiative where youngsters would be rewarded if they “exhibit the school values either in school, at home or in the local community”.

When new head teacher Christine Creaney arrived, the school decided upon six core values that represent the principles and ideals of its community: inclusion; determination; respect; ambition; responsibility; and creativity.

These were created in collaboration with pupils, parents and staff to ensure a variety of ideas and opinions were heard.

The school felt it was important to highlight the success of pupils and hold an awards ceremony at the end of each month where pupils are given a certificate and badge – with a corresponding value on it – as a reward.

A spokesperson for the school said: “There have been a variety of reasons for nominating so far, including a pupil who is a young carer and looks after his older brother, another who has provided a great deal of additional care over the past year while continuing with home learning at the same time and someone who is hugely talented and has an excellent work ethic.

“Nominations are made via the school’s website and pupils can be nominated for multiple values.

“Any pupil who collects all values in the course of a year get an additional award from the head teacher.”
