Some secondary pupils affected by school closures can still get HPV vaccine

Young people affected by some of Manchester's school closures will be given the option to attend drop-in clinics at health centers in order to receive the HPV vaccine.

At the start of the January term, Manchester School Health Service’s immunisation team were due to give vaccinations to year 8 pupils at Chorlton High South, Eden Girls Leadership Academy, Parrs Wood High School and Wright Robinson College.

However, the start of the new term has been delayed for Manchester's secondary school pupils due to high rates of coronavirus infection.

Those taking exams this year are expected to return on January 11, with other secondary pupils set to return on January 18.

The delays are aimed to help provide high schools with the necessary time needed to set up mass testing measures.

Some primary schools across Manchester have also decided to delay the start of the new school term due to Covid fears.

In response to the school closures, the School Health Service will be holding appointments at health clinics across Manchester over the next two weeks to cater for those pupils unable to attend school for their vaccination.

The HPV vaccine helps to protect against a number of cancers and is available to girls and boys aged 12 or 13.

High risk types of HPV can be found in more than 99 pc of cervical cancers.

The vaccine is given as two injections in the upper arm spaced at least six months apart.

Those due to have a HPV vaccine at Chorlton High South, Eden Girls Leadership Academy, Parrs Wood High School or Wright Robinson College in the next two weeks can book a drop-in appointment by calling 07854 972 072 or emailing mft.immunisation@nhs.net.
