Second World War bomb discovered by man clearing his garden in Fishponds

A Second World War bomb was discovered by a man while clearing his garden in Fishponds in Bristol.

The man alerted police after discovering the explosive, thought to be an Italian Brixia mortar bomb, yesterday (March 22).

Avon and Somerset Police officers then called out an army bomb disposal team.

The bomb was taken to nearby playing fields in Mayfield Park South, off Moorlands Road, where it was detonated.

Speaking to the BBC, Steve Tinker, 64, believes the bomb was a souvenir brought back from the war.

Mr Tinker, who works as a Health and Social Care teacher at City of Bristol College, said: "The police came, and then called the bomb disposal experts from the army.

"The mortars weren't used here in Britain during the war, so someone must have bought it back, probably as a souvenir."

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “We were called at about 11.55am by a householder who discovered what he thought was a 2WW mortar bomb in his garden in Berkeley Road, Fishponds.

“Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) were called who removed the item and detonated it in Mayfield Park South, Moorlands Road.”

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence added: “We had an EOD team there, in support of local police.”
