Second top Cardiff restaurant in a day announces sudden closure due to 'spiralling' costs

A much-loved restaurant in the heart of Whitchurch, Cardiff, has announced the devastating news of its closure. Sopra 73 is run by Marc Palladino, owner of both Sopra 73 and popular pizzeria housed below Pizzeria Villaggio, and who opened the restaurant less than two years ago. Now, however, it is shutting its door as a result of the ongoing financial crisis.

In the time since it opened it has garnered a plethora of glittering reviews from foodies across the city, receiveing a nod from Jay Rayner, and has become a staple in the community with its French and Italian food cooked by head chef Padrig Jones. The news of its closure comes just hours after another firm favourite, Bully's, announced similar news and foodies are heartbroken.

Taking to social media, Marc announced its closure with a heartfelt message that read: "It is with a very heavy heart that I have made the decision to permanently close Sopra 73. Unfortunately we aren’t able to sustain the business due to the spiralling cost of utilities and produce.

"The upstairs dining room will consolidate as part of Pizzeria Villaggio, and we will be utilising the kitchen upstairs to expand our takeaway business. All Sopra 73 staff have been transferred to Pizzeria Villaggio and Sopra 73 will make an appearance as a 'pop up' from time to time. Local/independently run businesses are the heartbeat of every community and now is a very challenging time, please remember to shop local at every opportunity. Thank you to every customer who has dined with us at Sopra 73."

Fans of the restaurant were quick to send their messages of condolences and voice their sadness at the restaurant, which we even featured in our Top 50 of 2023, closing down - although many were delighted to hear that it wasn't the end of Sopra 73.

Instagram user @dpowell2018, wrote: "Sopra73/GlassofBandol night was perfect. So sorry it hasn’t worked as the vibe and quality of food was superb", while another on Facebook said: "Gutted - for you and your customers. You're not alone unfortunately. The Government needs to get a grip but they won't. Can only hope that energy prices come down to a realistic level otherwise hospitality will disappear."

One fan on Twitter, @bollerrrr, added: "Such a shame , the shoulder of lamb was lovely last time . The sector needs assistance, so many are in a similar position. Prices have spiralled out of control . Keep the pizzas going . Good luck."
