Second suspect named in Michael Toohey murder investigation

A second suspect has been named in relation to the Michael Toohey murder investigation.

The 18-year-old, of Oil Street, Liverpool died following an assault outside an internet café on London Road at around 5.50pm on Saturday, April 16. A post mortem confirmed he died from multiple injuries.

Michael Williams, 24, of Carlake Grove was arrested and subsequently charged on Wednesday, June 8, with the murder. He has been remanded into custody to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court today.

Anthony Williams, 31, of Hillbrook Drive, Walton, was arrested and charged with murder on May 17. Following an appearance at Liverpool Magistrates Court that day, he was further remanded to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on 14 November.

A total of 10 people – including the two charged – have now been arrested on suspicion of Michael Toohey’s murder. They are:

  • A 20-year-old man from Kirkby has been conditionally bailed
  • A 14-year-old male from Liverpool has been conditionally bailed
  • A 15-year-old male from Liverpool has been conditionally bailed
  • A 33-year-old man of no fixed address has been conditionally bailed
  • A 14-year-old male from Liverpool has been conditionally bailed
  • A 25-year-old man from Kirkby has been conditionally bailed
  • A 25-year-old man from Kirkby has been conditionally bailed
  • A 19-year-old man from Kirkby has been conditionally bailed

A 34-year-old woman, from Fazakerley, remains on bail following her arrest on suspicion of assisting an offender. Anyone with information on this incident can contact @MerPolCC, 101 or @CrimestoppersUK, anonymously on 0800 555 111 with reference 22000261976.

Michael's family later paid tribute to their "kind, caring and courageous" son, while his girlfriend Rhianna Draper said he made her the "happiest girl alive" in a heartbreaking tribute. Public tributes also poured in for the dad-to-be, with many leaving flowers close to the scene.
