Second Republic of Ireland player tests positive for Covid-19

Stephen Kenny and his staff are awaiting the outcome of a re-test on a second Ireland international who has tested positive for Covid-19.

The camp was thrown into further disarray this morning after the results of last night’s round of testing came to light.

A second player - who is asymptomatic - has tested positive for the virus and was re-tested today in the hope it returns a false positive.  The results are expected this evening.

The squad was due to travel to Helsinki today for Wednesday’s Nations League clash, but the FAI changed those plans last night to allow for any fallout from today’s test results.

Before yesterday’s 0-0 draw with Wales, it was confirmed that one player had tested positive and four others were deemed close contacts.

Callum Robinson, John Egan, Alan Browne and Callum O’Dowda were the four close contacts ruled out of the Aviva Stadium clash.

The player who has tested positive today is not among that quartet.

Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah have rejoined the squad after missing the Slovakia playoff in controversial circumstances.

And Kenny has also added Dara O’Shea, Jason Knight, Ryan Manning and Ronan Curtis to the fold for the Finland game.
