Second prisoner found dead at Scots jail as probe into circumstances launched

An investigation has been launched after a second prisoner was found dead at a Scots jail.

Conor McHugh passed away suddenly at HMP Kilmarnock on September 8.

It is understood that the 29-year-old’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

Conor was convicted at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court in 2020 (UGC)

However, a Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death.

The Scottish Prison Service confirmed the prisoner’s death and said that the matter had been reported to Police Scotland and the Procurator Fiscal.

McHugh was serving a sentence after being convicted of a breach of the peace.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Prison Service said: “Conor McHugh, 29, a prisoner from HMP Kilmarnock has died.

“He was convicted at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court in 2020.

“Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

“A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course.”

An FAI into Conor's death will be held in due course (UGC)

A balloon release in memory of McHugh is being arranged by his heartbroken friends and loved ones.

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.

We earlier told how another investigation is ongoing following the death of a second Scots prisoner.

Reese Fairgrieve, 23, from Glenrothes, was found at HMP Perth on Sunday.

His death is not being treated as suspicious but a probe into the full circumstances remains ongoing.
