Second person dies after horrific M6 petrol tanker crash

The death toll of a horrific petrol tanker crash on the M6 has risen - as a second person dies from their injuries.

Police and an air ambulance were called at around 6.40pm last Wednesday (May 15) to reports of a collision between a Peugeot 207 car and a petrol tanker between Junctions 27 and 28 northbound.

Emergency services attended the incident but the driver of the Peugeot, named as 21-year-old Kamrooj Zaman from Blackburn, died at the scene as a result of serious injuries.

Six days after the incident Lancashire Police confirmed that a second person has now died.

A spokesperson for the force said: "A woman has sadly died following a collision on the M6 last week.

"A 21-year-old woman from Blackburn, a passenger in the Peugeot, suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital.

"She sadly died of her injuries in hospital yesterday (20 May)."

The driver of the tanker, a 58-year-old man from Ellesmere Port, was not injured.

The motorway was closed for four hours while accident investigators attended the scene.

Sgt Tracy Ward, of Lancashire’ Road Policing Unit, said: "This is extremely sad news and our thoughts are with both the man and woman’s family and friends at this incredibly distressing time.

“We are continuing to work hard to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and we would urge anybody who saw all or part of the incident to get in touch as soon as possible.”

Anybody with information is asked to get in touch on 101, quoting log number 1448 of May 15.
