Second night of police checkpoints in Belfast

Police in South Belfast set up a number of vehicle checkpoints on Sunday night (December 12) in the wake of a similar operation by their colleagues in the north of the city on Saturday.

Designed to apprehend impaired drivers and thwart criminal activity, the checkpoints were implemented primarily to ensure that drivers were using the roads safely and legally.

Police South Belfast tweeted: "A number of roadside breath tests were conducted and thankfully they were negative."

Saturday's checkpoints in the north of Belfast were to root out "criminal activity and drink/drug driving".

North Belfast police added that a number of breath tests were carried out, and urged motorists to never drive under the influence drink and drugs.

They tweeted: "We’re on the lookout out for criminal activity and drink/drug driving.

"A number of breath tests already carried out. Never drive under the influence of drink/drugs… it really isn’t worth it."
