Second Newport by-election in six months called after councillor's sudden resignation

A Newport council ward will hold its second by-election in less than six months following the sudden resignation of one of its councillors.

The Victoria by-election will be held on Thursday, December 2, it was confirmed on Tuesday.

It comes after Labour's Abdul-Majid Rahman resigned from the council on Wednesday, October 13. A council spokesperson confirmed Mr Rahman "resigned for personal reasons on Wednesday October 13 with immediate effect".

Mr Rahman had represented the Victoria ward since 2012 and was selected as a candidate for Welsh Labour’s regional list in the May 2021 Senedd elections. His resignation leaves Labour’s Farzina Hussain as the only current councillor for the Victoria ward.

Cllr Hussain was elected at a by-election in Victoria held back in May on the same day as the Senedd elections. She triumphed with 1,138 votes ahead of Lib Dems' Mike Hamilton on 402 votes, and replaced Christine Jenkins, who left the council last March due to ill health.

The latest by-election will take place on Thursday December 2. The deadline for receipt of nominations is Friday, November 5, at 5pm, and final date for registering to vote is Tuesday, November 16.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on December 2, with a deadline for postal vote applications of 5pm on Wednesday, November 17.
