Subjects in Construction, a collaboration between Scottish choreographer/ dancer Colette Sadler and Spanish dancer JA Saourin, is sombre, quiet and gently shocking. Sadler tears herself from a mirror; Saourin breaks free from the clingfilm that encases his body. The couple join together - near-naked, they fold into a tight bundle and roll across the floor, to surprisingly tender effect. She has red numbers on her back that suggest the Holocaust.
Sadler has worked in Spain for a number of years and performs in the densely physical, theatrical, European style like a natural. She and Saourin are muscular dancers who move with precision and confidence, offering a moment of reflection in the hectic fringe.
In the second part of this double bill, Henry Montes keeps things moody with Flottmanhalle, a group of four solos named after the location in Germany in which they were conceived.
Originally from New York, Montes follows the abstract American way of dance. He is a lovely mover, tall, with curly toes and a loose-limbed poise. In an empty, well-lit space, he offers a close-up view of the human body moving through the elements, to a tick-tocking soundtrack. A pure dance performance, cool and cerebral.
