Second Midlothian school asks entire year to self-isolate after Covid cases confirmed

A second high school in Midlothian has confirmed a number of coronavirus cases with just weeks left of the school term.

Lasswade High School informed parents on Friday (June 11) that a "small cluster" of cases had been reported, with the track and trace process underway.

A letter from NHS Lothian stated that all pupils in their third year should remain at home and continue with online learning, with any other pupils who have not been contacted to return to school as normal.

All third year pupils will remain at home until June 21.

The education centre is the second to confirm an outbreak, after nearby school St David's RC in Dalkeith was also forced to ask their entire third year class to stay at home.

The two high schools are the main education centres in Bonnyrigg and Dalkeith, which are just a short 15 minute drive from one another.

Advice from NHS Lothian added: "The school has multiple control measures in place against COVID-19, supported with regular testing of staff, to limit any risk of onwards transmission with the school environment. However, ifthere are any further cases of COVID-19 in the school, we will work with the school to ensure these individuals, and any of their close contacts, are advised to self-isolate promptly.

"In addition, if there are any further important updates we will communicate this to the school community."

It comes as 947 new cases of Covid-19 were identified across Scotland on Tuesday (June 15) as well as two additional deaths.

Midlothian is currently under level two restrictions alongside the City of Edinburgh, after a sharp rise in cases was identified earlier this month.
