Second man jailed over Canberra cafe fire

The jury was shown CCTV footage of the arson attack.

The second man found guilty of the Brierly's Cafe arson attack in Canberra has been sentenced to jail for his role in the fire and a separate offence of defrauding Australian banks.

Leo Nicholas Eliadis, 47, and Nick Parlov, 23,were found guilty last month of burning down Brierly's Cafe in 2014.

The Crown argued during the trial Parlov was the one who lit the fire, while Eliadis organised the crime.

The new owners, who had only taken possession of the cafe hours before it was set alight, detailed in a statement yesterday of how it had led them to financial and personal ruin.

Today in the ACT Supreme Court, Eliadis was sentenced over the arson attack, as well as for being part of a criminal group that defrauded Australian banks of more than half a million dollars in a plot that spanned across Australia and Greece.

The court heard the money had not yet been recovered by the Australian banks.

Chief Justice Helen Murrell sentenced Eliadis to four years' jail with a non-parole period of two years.
