Second man dies in Storm Arwen after being hit by falling tree just hours after motorist killed

A second man has died at the hands of Storm Arwen after he was hit by a falling tree in Cumbria.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Vicarage Road in Ambleside at around 11pm on Friday as strong winds battered large parts of the country.

Police have confirmed that the man, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders, LancashireLive reports.

The road remains closed while emergency crews work to make the area safe from the dangerous tree.

Just hours earlier, a father-of-four in Antrim, Northern Ireland, died after his vehicle was struck by an uprooted tree, the Mirror reports.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, has been named locally as headteacher Francis Lagan who worked at St Mary’s Primary School in Maghera, Co Londonderry.

On Friday, the Met Office issued a rare ‘danger to life’ warning from 3pm on Friday with winds predicted to hit up to 100mph in certain areas.

A massive clear up operation remains underway across the country with severe travel disruption across the road and rail network in Scotland.
