Second man arrested and charged after man died in 'disturbance' in Airdrie

A second man has been arrested and charged after a man died in an alleged Easter Sunday disturbance, police have confirmed.

Peter McElroy, 45, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene in High Street, Airdrie on April 12.

Gerard McGinlay, 38, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Tuesday charged with his murder.

McGinlay, who was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon, made no plea and was remanded in custody.

A second 47-year-old man has also now been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged assault.

He is due to appear before Hamilton Sheriff Court on Monday.

Police and paramedics wearing protective masks due to the Covid-19 pandemic raced to the scene around 4.40pm after receiving reports of a “disturbance” and surrounded the victim.

Sadly, Peter died soon after and a police cordon was thrown up and patrol cars used to block off the road.

Detective Inspector Frank Travers from the Major Investigations Team said: "Again I must thank the support and assistance we have received from the local community following this incident."
