Second home ownership plunges by a third in Scotland

The owning of second homes has declined by just more than a third in eight years, according to new research.

Between 2010 and 2018 there has been an overall fall of 34%, although the picture varies significantly across Scotland. In both Eastern Scotland and South Western Scotland there was a decline of 43% over the period, while North Eastern Scotland was down 41%.

But in the Highlands and Islands, the fall was only 13%.

Swinton Insurance has analysed government second home data and broken down the regions to show the percentage change in second home purchases.

Moray has experienced the best increase in second homes with a 40% increase, while West Dunbartonshire has seen the biggest decline at minus 98%.

Further analysis of the fastest rates of growth in the last two years for which figures are available (2016-2018) has shown the predicted parts of the UK which will have the most growth in second homes in 2020.

Glasgow is the only Scottish location in the list with a predicted 17% increase in second homes.
