Second Handforth Parish Council video star resigns in a week

A second Handforth Parish Council star from the infamous Jackie Weaver viral video clip has resigned.

Aled Brewerton, who can be heard shouting ‘read the standing orders, read them and understand them!’ in the clip, has left his post as a councillor in the West Ward.

A statement from the parish council said: "Following the resignation of Cllr Aled Brewerton there is now a second vacancy in the West Ward.

"This may be filled by co-option or by election, the latter taking place if 10 electors of the Parish give notice to the Returning Office within 14 days of the Notice."

It follows the resignation of Handforth Parish Council’s chairman, Brian Tolver, on April 26.

He can be heard telling Jackie Weaver that she ‘has no authority here’ in the clip.

In the video, which has been seen by millions of people around the world, acting clerk Jackie Weaver removes Brian Tolver from a meeting, prompting an irate reaction from Mr Brewerton.

Problems have persisted at the council for some time, with officials pledging to improve the situation at a meeting in May 2017.

Mr Tolver did not give a reason for his dramatic resignation during Monday’s meeting, but batted off suggestions that it was because he supports a proposed merger with Wilmslow Town Council.

Currently, Cheshire East Council is reviewing its internal parish council boundaries — with one proposal to effectively abolish the Handforth authority by merging it with Wilmslow and Chorley.

The move has been met with strong opposition by some parish councillors in the town.

Cllr Cynthia Samson said: “I will be campaigning vigorously to stay independent. We are not the poor relations of Wilmslow.

“We have an excellent community. Somebody has just looked at a map and saw we are an independent parish council.”
