Second-half struggles, Gedson's battle - 5 things spotted in Tottenham's draw at Crystal Palace

Gedson's battle

Jose Mourinho made a couple of changes to his Tottenham squad at Crystal Palace following the return of Eric Dier and Dele Alli.

With the duo missing out through suspension and injury respectively since the start of the month, it was Juan Foyth and Gedson Fernandes who made way.

The Portuguese signing has been a regular in the Spurs squad since his January arrival from Benfica and it was a shock to see him left out.

The return of Premier League football has highlighted just how strong Mourinho's squad is with the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Moussa Sissoko returning from bad injuries.

It also means the head coach has some tough decisions when it comes to his selection, with Gedson the latest one to be omitted.

Mourinho's decision at Palace highlights that the young midfielder still has plenty to do if he is to make a name for himself in north London and that he has a big battle on his hands.

It will now be next season when Spurs fans get to see the 21-year-old in action and all will be hoping they finally see the very best of him after limited game time so far in his short time in the capital.

Dier's position

Not many fans expected Mourinho to make any changes to his team for the key game at Selhurst Park.

The Lilywhites went into the match on the back of a three successive wins and in that time the boss had not changed his starting XI.

The 57-year-old only made the one alteration in SE25 and it saw Dier come straight back in after his four-match suspension in place of Davinson Sanchez.

The Colombian will no doubt have felt hard done by given his recent performances but Mourinho's selection appears to confirm that Dier is now one of the first names on his teamsheet at Spurs.

Dier's return also meant that he took on the left centre-back berth to allow Toby Alderweireld to move across to the right.

That will become his permanent role if he plays alongside the Belgian on a regular basis next term.

Kane's form

It seems bizarre that some people even doubted that Kane would score goals in Mourinho's team.

Struggling at times this campaign with Spurs finding it hard to create any meaningful chances for the striker, he has still managed to score 24 times for the Lilywhites.

Hitting four goals in two games prior to the trip across the capital, the England captain carried on his impressive form in SE25 with a well-taken goal in the first half.

He wasn't able to add a second of the game but he has proved recently that he will always score goals for Spurs.

Seen as a slow starter in recent seasons with him struggling to net in August, he will be intent on making a fast start next term and silencing people once again in the process.

Lo Celso's influence

Spurs fans have started to see the best of Giovani Lo Celso in 2020 after a slow start to his career in N17.

Playing the majority of the campaign in a midfield two next to Harry Winks, he has moved into the No.10 role in recent weeks and the team are benefiting in an attacking sense.

The Argentine is no stranger to the position after flourishing there last campaign during his successful year at Real Betis.

Registering his first Premier League assist in the 3-1 away triumph at Newcastle United recently, he added another to his tally in the game at Crystal Palace.

It was brilliant play from the ex-Paris Saint-Germain ace and he has given supporters a glimpse of what's to come next season if he carries on in his current role.

His numbers will no doubt skyrocket in 2020/21 if Mourinho continues to use him just behind Kane.

Second-half struggles

Spurs were in control at Selhurst Park during the first half courtesy of Kane's early goal.

However, they looked a totally different side after the break as the hosts dominated and duly equalised through Jeffrey Schlupp.

It could have got even worse for the side had Joel Ward's deflected cross dropped in rather than hitting the post.

Spurs have started well in a number of games since the restart but they have now a number of times dropped off after taking the lead, with the 1-1 draw against Manchester United a prime example.

It's something they have to work on as they need to be playing at their best from the very first minute if they are to climb the table and challenge at the top of the league again.

It's another area Mourinho will be looking for his side to improve on as he bids to wins trophies and challenge the best next year.
