The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) in Glasgow has been dogged by patient safety
scandals since it opened in 2015.
An investigation confirmed that the deaths of two children were linked to infections at the hospital.
One was Milly Main, a 10-year-old who contracted a water-linked infection while in remission from leukaemia.
Milly’s mum Kimberly was first alerted to the possible link after reading the Daily Record.
It was then confirmed in an official report – four years after her child’s death.
As we revealed yesterday, the family of the second child may not even know about the infection link.
The investigation team has not been able to locate one of the families relevant to the probe and the Government is refusing to provide more details.
Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, who has fought for justice for Milly’s family, insists it is the second family who lost a child.
If true, a vulnerable family has not been informed of a key reason behind their child’s death.
The Government, health board and investigation team must convene a summit as a matter of urgency.
All avenues must be pursued in an attempt to locate the family, who are currently in the dark.
And a statement must be provided showing the efforts that have already been made.
The NHS is supposed to put people first but this is an appalling example of parents being badly let down.
As Sarwar has said, clinicians raised the two deaths internally in 2019, so the health board should have acted much earlier.
Had they done so, we may not have been in this position of searching for a grieving family.
