Second coronavirus death at Southmead Hospital in two days

A patient has died at Southmead Hospital after contracting coronavirus - the second death recorded there in two days.

According to the latest Government figures, two people died at North Bristol Trust on October 11 and 12. While both deaths were last week, it sometimes takes a while for the documents to be updated.

The previous person to die after testing positive for the virus before this date was on August 25, some two months before.

Cases across Bristol have been soaring in recent weeks, and now deaths in the city are also rising.

This means the number of Bristol hospital Covid-related deaths since March now stands at 275.

The latest death was added to the Covid-19 figures on the same day that a two-week “firebreak” lockdown has been announced for Wales.

It will come into force from 6pm on Friday and last until November 9, First Minister Mark Drakeford has confirmed.

And it was also revealed today that more than 900 students at the University of Bristol have tested positive for the virus.

The outbreak among the university's community was first confirmed on October 7 and there are now two student accommodation buildings in the city in lockdown due to the virus spreading there.
